If Caroline, Matt, Bonnie, and everyone else were vampires with their emotions turned off, Elena would never give up on them and never judge them or lose hope with them because she would know they weren’t themselves. She’s been trying to kill them and bully them. Who in their right mind would stick around for that?

Someone who understands that you’re not yourself, that you’ve gone off the deep end and none of the horrible things you’ve been doing you would actually do if you were in your right mind. If the situation was flipped, Elena would give any of her friends the amount of understanding and patience that one who has turned off their emotions deserves. This is when Elena needs her friends most and they can’t handle the responsibility or the difficulty. I’m not saying I wish they were perfect. They’re human. I just think they’ve all reached the end of their patience for her way too quickly when she would never reach her breaking point if she had to watch them go through this. Remember how patient and strong and understanding she was when Damon had his humanity turned off? When Stefan did? Elena stuck around the entire time and stayed with them for everything, even during the times when quite honestly she shouldn’t have (I’m referring to Stefan but that’s not the point of this discussion). The rest of the Mystic Falls gang should really take that incredible example from her. It’s the least they could do when they know all that she’s been through.

Damon didn’t have his humanity switched off in season 1. Everything he did was for the love of Katherine, he was just an asshole. And no Elena shouldn’t have been understanding of Damon abusing Caroline and trying to kill Bonnie and Jeremy and turning Vicky. You know why she was understanding of Stefan? Cuz the entire reason he was being Klaus’s slave was to save Damon’s sorry ass and protect Elena so Klaus wouldn’t find out she was still alive. So even under the mask of the Ripper, Stefan was still trying to protect Elena. Bonnie and Caroline should not feel obligated to someone who doesn’t even care enough to feel and tries to kill them.
